JOHN STUART, MARQUIS OF BUTE. Descended from
sir John Stuart, a son
of king Robert II. to whom his father granted possessions in the isle of
Bute. Sir James, his descendant, was created a baronet, by king Charles I.
1627, whose grandson, sir James, was of the
privy council to queen Anne, and created earl of Bute, 1703 he died
1710. His son James,
second earl, died 1722
leaving John, third earl, whose celebrity in the
annals of the present reign, requires no elucidation here. He married the
daughter of the far-famed lady Mary Wortley Montagu, and died in an
unbroken retirement, in which he had for many years secluded himself, on
March 10 1792. He left a large family. BROWNLOW CECIL, MARQUIS OF The heir of that profound statesman,
William Cecil, lord Burleigh, whom queen Elizabeth created a baron,
Feb. 25. 1571, and who died Aug. 4, 1598, æt. 78. King James made his son
and heir earl of Exeter, on May 4, 1605: he died 1622 aged 80.
David, his grandson, third earl, died 1643. John, fifth earl, died 1700.
Brownlow, his grandson, eighth earl, died 1754 and was succeeded by his
son, Brownlow, ninth earl, who dying 1793, was succeeded by his nephew,
Henry Chambers, tenth earl, born 1754, who was created marquis of
Exeter, Feb. 4, 1801 and having led a retired life, died May 1, 1804
leaving, by his second wife, Sarah Noggins, a son and heir,
