(1) Thoresby states that Edward Fairfax, Esq., lived at an ancient house near the Church (then Alderman Dixon's s), where most of his children were born, and that he was an eminent Poet and author of several learned and ingenious Treatises (Ducatus, pp. 38 and 65). In 1741 the house belonged to Mr. Timo Smith; in 1756, to Mr. Gervas Smith, who died in 1760, unmarried, having settled his estates on Mr. Thos. Wilkinson, who sold it in 1761 to Mr. John Smith, and he re-edifyed it and built a new front to it.-Wilson's Notes. The wife of Edward Fairfax was Dorothy, daughter of Martin Laycock, of Leeds (Dugdale's Visitation, p. 156). His daughter Elizabeth was the wife of Philip Richardson. Dr. Collins has kindly given the following references:-Paver's Marriage Licenses : 1597-8, Edward Fairfax and Cath. Calverley, wid., of Otley. 1600-1, Edward Fairfax, Newhall, par. Otley, and Dorothy Laycock, of Leeds. And for an article on Edward Fairfax see Lays and Leaves of the Forest, by Thos. Parkinson, pp. 105 to 122 ; and for notes of his children, pp. 142-4.
  (2) Afterwards Sir Ingram Hopton, Kt. He was slain 14 October, 1643, at Winsby Fight, near Horncastle, in Lincolnshire.-Ducatus, p. 187, and Wilson's Notes.
